I can safely say that it's going to take you a while to get the black and the white dyes, even in pre! I've being playing GW since the release of Prophecies and to date have had only 5 black and 2 white drop for me.

The red and silver may drop more often, but why not just buy them from a dye trader?

There is no real good dye drop place. They can drop anywhere, although due to simpler loot tables, the mobs outside of ascalon and general ascalon area are usually faster to farm.

In my experience from collection of dyes, one black dye drops for every 300 others.

I have to agree with Azagoth. I've been playing for about 16 months and in all that time I've found maybe 5-6 black dyes, and only 1 white dye (the dye weekend). Plenty of lesser colors though. But those are so cheap, it's not really a problem to buy them.

May have the best luck (price wise) trying to buy the dyes off of other players. Sure, most will price them pretty near the trader price, but it should still be a bit cheaper.

It's the luck of the draw. On another thread, I said that in the 6-7 months I'd been playing I had gotten three black dyes. Someone posted right after me to say they had been playing for 1.5 years and never had a black drop.

But the pre-searing advice is good; and Ascalon; Shing Jea island is another good place for dye drops. Just solo, so you get all the drops.

Well in all of my 1,400+ hours of playing, I have gotten 3 black dyes and 1 white dye drop for me. 2 of those black dyes were in pre-searing. So i would suggest there.

The best places I have found for dye drops are the Charr (mission) or Gargoyles at Nolani. Just solo it so you get all the drops. Just last night I got a black and silver dye on one run thru the gargoyles. Also got a brown and yellow on earlier runs. To date, 1800 hrs, I have found 12 black, 30 or 40 silver, 6 brown, 2 white and a whole lot of the other colors.

Well...if you want the easiest place to find dye, then well its *cough* dye merchant *cough*

Or if you are referring to dye drops, I would definitely start in pre. I think a lot of people have had success there, including myself.

Gotta love posts like these. Everyone always has something better, faster, bigger, or shinier, but never, ever tells. Like Anet, or anyone else for that matter, gives a shit that you farm dyes. Get real.

I think the most critical factor isn't so much where you farm, as how many kills you make. Increased kills -> increased drops of all types, including dye, and any monster can drop any dye.

That said, I've had good luck with drops in pre-searing (gargoyles, devourers, and charr) and in Nolani (gargoyles and charr), just as other people have posted. I've also gotten quite a few colored dyes from farming minotaurs & trolls - like I said, I think it has more to do with numbers than type of monsters.

EDIT: For the record, I've gotten 1 white in pre-searing, 1 white in Elona, both in the past week. I've gotten black dyes just about everywhere, but the majority in pre-searing. I've gotten colored dyes everywhere, but again, the majority were found in pre-searing.

actually that is the best part........i am there for something else and pick up the dyes because they stack.

if they didnt stack i would only take B/W as i dont need the gold but i do need/want the other items

as for telling you havent been around to see what a farming frenzy does to the drop nerf.

i go there now and then as doing it steady would drive me nuts
